Stair Runner Installation

The Art of the Stair Runner

A professional fitting, captured from first measurement to final step — and what makes a runner feel truly tailored to a home.

Why homeowners choose stair runners

A stair runner brings a staircase to life — softening each step underfoot, quietening a busy home, and drawing the eye with a band of colour and texture framed by timber on either side.

Where a fully carpeted staircase can feel purely practical, a runner feels considered. It is a tailored detail that lifts an entire hallway, and one of the most transformative changes you can make to a home.

A well-chosen runner is the difference between a staircase you simply walk on, and one you notice.

The installation process

  1. 1

    Prepare

The staircase is cleared and checked, ready for a clean, secure fit.

  2. 2

    Gripper

Fitted to hold the runner firmly and safely in place on every step.

  3. 3

    Underlay

Laid over each tread for comfort, quiet and lasting wear.

  4. 4

    Position

The runner is centred so the borders sit perfectly even on both sides.

  5. 5

    Finish

Each step, turn and landing is worked by hand for a flawless result.

Design considerations

Much of a runner’s character comes down to a few choices: the width, and with it the balance of border on each side; the pattern, and the direction it runs; and the finishing details, from bound edges to traditional stair rods.

Plain and Berber carpets are forgiving and timeless; stripes and herringbone make a confident statement — worth planning carefully on turning staircases.

Before You Order

  • Measure carefully, or let us guide you through it.
  • Decide how much border you would like on each side.
  • Consider the pattern direction before you choose.
  • Tell us about any turns, winders or landings.

Third-party demonstration video, hosted on YouTube

Herringbone laminate captures the timeless elegance of parquet — the warmth and rhythm of wood-block flooring — with the durability and easy care of a modern floor.

Laid from a central line so the pattern stays balanced, it rewards careful planning with a result that feels both classic and considered.

Good to Know

  • Herringbone uses more cuts — allow a little extra for waste.
  • Let planks acclimatise in the room before fitting.
  • Leave an expansion gap and finish with matching trims.

Good to Know

  • A clean, level subfloor is essential to the finish.
  • Allow extra material for the herringbone cuts.
  • Follow the maker’s underlay and expansion guidance.

Buying Advice

Notes from our experts

Considered advice to help you choose, prepare for and care for a floor you will love for years.

Choosing the right floor

The finest choice balances how a room is lived in with the look you love. Hard-wearing surfaces suit hallways and kitchens; the warmth of carpet or wood belongs in bedrooms and living rooms.

Preparing the space

A beautiful floor begins beneath the surface. A clean, dry, level base — and time to let new flooring acclimatise — is what keeps every plank and runner sitting perfectly.

Caring for your floor

With a little care, quality lasts. Lift grit regularly, wipe spills promptly, protect with felt pads, and follow the maker’s guidance to keep your floor looking its best.
